Braun SE7781 Silk-Epil Xpressive Review

Editor's Review

General Braun SE7781 Silk-Epil Xpressive Epilator Overview
Braun has been making highly rated Braun Silk-epil epilators for more than 15 years and many loyal enthusiasts of these fine products believe this latest model is the best yet. There are plenty of home hair removal systems available to women today. These include hair removal creams, home light pulse therapy, laser systems, and old fashioned shaving. For many women none of those solutions work, for a variety of reason. The Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781is an alternative hair removal system that is worth considering anytime you get tired of shaving, don’t want the expense of other systems, or are most comfortable with a straight-forward hair remover that simulates shaving but produces much better results. Updated and refined, the Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 gets high marks for many of its outstanding features.

Results Last Much Longer than Shaving
When you choose to shave away unwanted hair you are committed to shaving every few days, depending on what part of your body the hair is growing. Stubble can appear as early as the next day, producing very short-term results at best. The Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 removes hair by the roots so its growth has to begin all over again. In most women this produces a clean, smooth look and feel for 2-4 weeks rather than a couple of days. It takes about the save time to use the Silk-epil as it does to shave, and your efforts produce longer lasting results that take a lot of the hassle out of getting your skin smooth and hair-free.

Softens Hair Rather than Making it Tougher
Another complaint commonly heard from women who shave is that the hair returns coarser, even thicker over time, which is very discouraging. With the Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 the vast majority of women notice results that are just the opposite. After using the epilator the hair typically returns finer and weaker, making your next use even easier. In some cases the hair stops growing permanently, though most won’t be quite that fortunate.

Pain Free Hair Removal – in Time
While Braun advertisers the Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 to be pain free from the very first use most women report a small amount of discomfort in the beginning. After several times epilating with the Xpressive the skin adjusts, the hair weakens and is easier to extract and using this tool does become virtually pain free for most users. A tingling feeling may persist, but most consider that minimal discomfort compared even with razor burn. It certainly is preferred to waxing or laser treatments for most customers.
To facilitate a pain-free experience Braun has built new features into the Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 that represent a distinct improvement over earlier models. The unit stimulates the skin as it passes over, removes the hair, and completes the pass with by soothing the skin. Most women who have used older models and then tried this one do report that the new design produces less pain and discomfort, and that is good news!

Versatility is Built In
The areas where most men and women want to remove hair represent very different shapes and textures. Legs are easy, armpits are challenging, and the bikini area is contoured differently than both. To handle the differing needs of these various locations the Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 features a 2-speed design for its 40-tweezer system and a pivoting head that follows the natural shape of your body. A nifty light on the head – the SmartLight—shows you where you’re going and highlights hard to see hairs so you won’t miss them and regret it later, when you are out and about wanting to look your best.

Use it, Wash it, and You’re Done
Braun has made the Xpressive as easy to care for as possible. After each use simply soap up the tool and rinse it clean under the tap. The mechanisms are waterproof and corrosion-resistant. There’s no need for disassembling the unit and tediously cleaning it with the utmost care. Braun built usability into the design and that is a real plus.

It is Rechargeable and Cordless
It you’ve tried using a corded electric shaver you know how much the cord can get in the way. It wraps around your legs or torso when you’re reaching for out of the way spots and you have to continually reposition the tool. The Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 is cordless to enhance the ease with which you can cover any area of your body. The unit recharges quickly so it is always ready to go when you need it.

A Nice Array of Accessories is Included
Different areas of your body require different strokes with the Xpressive epilator and Braun understands that. In addition to the basic unit and the standard head you will receive a Beginner Cap to use the first 2-4 times you cover any area, an Underarm Cap for the most challenging of all locations, and an Efficiency Cap that is great for giving areas a quick once-over for touch up in the week or two following use. The Massage attachment prepares the skin beforehand and soothes it afterwards, so you’ll finish the procedure feeling great.

I’ve done my share of waxing and shaving know how painful or irritating they can be. I didn’t think the Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 could be very different. I was pretty sure it wouldn’t remove all the hair on my back or shoulders since nothing else I’ve tried did. I’ll say that it has done a much better job than I expected and I’ll keep using it instead of waxes or shaving.

The first few times there was some discomfort in using it, but nothing like you get when waxing. My skin quickly got used to it and now it doesn’t really bother me at all. The more you use it the more conditioned your skin will get to it. If you typically get red bumps where hair has been pulled out then you probably won’t after you use this for 3-5 times.

I did find it takes 2 or 3 uses to really get your skin is smooth condition. Hair seems to grow in different cycles so some would be really short so the epilator couldn’t reach them. I’d let them grown and then get them the next time. Using it consistently I can now wait 14-17 days between epilating.

Other features of this unit that I think you’ll appreciate include the fact that it is cordless and rechargeable, making it really easy to use. Secondly, you don’t need to push down – in fact you should not push down—while using it. Just let the tool do its work. I found that after about 6 months I could use the Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 whenever I wanted to get rid of hair stubble, even if it is really short. If I’m going to the beach I just give my back and shoulders a once over with the help of my wife and I’m good to go. I’m amazed the epilator can grab even really short hairs.

For many years I used the 5681 epilator from Braun and I liked it for the most part. It was a bit painful but liked the results. I decided to try this model in hopes that it would as well or better while eliminating some of the pain. It does just what I had hoped and I’m really pleased with it.

The Xpressive SE7781 is very smooth. I think the new tweezers function, 40 in all, makes the whole thing a lot less painful. The addition of the various heads makes using it on different areas easier and more comfortable. The battery lasts for an average of 40-45 minutes and I find I can cover most areas in that amount of time, with ease.

I recently bought this product to see if it would do a better job than waxing. It works pretty well but still doesn’t do as good a job as Brazilian waxing which I get every 6 weeks. The attachments don’t get into the cracks and crevices like wax does and if your skin is at all wet the head will stick. I’ve used it a couple of times and find the hair grows back unevenly, maybe because I didn’t get it all the first time. I needed to do it the second time after only 1 week. I will probably return it and start waxing again. For me that’s a lot easier.

I have really sensitive skin and absolutely hate to shave. It irritates my skin for days and makes it red and bumpy in some places which looks worse than it being hairy. I just started epilating with this tool and have used it everywhere 2 times, and on my legs 3 times. So far I’m very encouraged by the results. The first time I used it some red bumps appeared but they weren’t bad. They went away by the next morning. Now they don’t come back at all.

I had heard that epilating was easier if you were accustomed to waxing so I started on areas that I have regularly waxed. It went great! The only problem was that I pushed too hard in some spots, like under my arms, and that irritated those areas. I learned that you do not have to push down hard to get a good job. The tweezers can grab even very short hair. That’s why I now do it when the hair is 2 or 3 mm long and it works very well.

I use the Silk-epil Xpressive Epilator SE7781 on my legs now, too. You don’t need anything to numb your legs. The Olay wipes are nice but don’t buy extra when you run out unless you like moisturizing your skin with them. They don’t help the epilator, I don’t think. I found that using it on my legs was very tolerable with only a slight amount of discomfort. I think it helps a lot to pull the skin tight before you pass the epilator over it. Start on a spot that is less sensitive and work your way to more sensitive spots. Since each person is different you’ll have to decide what that means for you specifically. I started on the side of my shin and did the inner part of my thighs last.

Like other users I read, my hair follicles turn into red bumps for about 12 hours. If I have an event that I want really smooth skin for I make sure I epilate 16-24 hours in advance, but not longer or shorter. I also rub on some soothing lotion after I epilate and that does make my skin feel soothed and smooth.
